42. Evangelism

Why do we evangelize?

1.   Because the world is lost and is in need of a Savior.

Eph 2:12  That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: 

Isaiah 53:6  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way...

Before people meet Christ, they are consumed with the things of this world, their own thoughts and sinful ways. They are blind and cannot see the right way, they are lost and far from God. If they continue in sin and never come to the Savior for salvation they will be lost for all eternity. We are to be like Jesus and go out into the dark of night and seek that one lost sheep until he is found and brought back into the safety of the fold!

2.   Because its only fair that we should share the good news!

Mat 5:16  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. 

Jesus has shined His wonderful light into our darkened heart. He forgave our sins, He made us His child, we have received His love, His mercy, His grace... How awful it would be if we failed to tell anybody of the wonderful joy and peace that Jesus gives! The whole world deserves the chance to at least hear about Jesus one time!

3.   Because Jesus left the responsibility of evangelizing the world to us.

Mark 16:15  And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 

     Jesus went back to Heaven and left His disciples to carry on His work. Those early disciples     obeyed His command to evangelize the world and in just 50 years after Pentecost most of the     world was evangelized. That was without the internet, without airplanes and phones. They were filled with the power and love of the Spirit and preached Jesus everywhere they went!

Rom 10:14  How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 

What do we say?  What is the “Gospel?”

It's good news. And its fairly simple.

God loves you.

God so loved the world that He gave His only Son Jesus to come to this world.

Jesus healed people, helped people and forgave their sins. Only Jesus has the power to forgive a person's sins. Jesus forgave people that were thieves, covetous, liars, even murderers.

The Bible tells us that everyone has sinned against God. We have broken God's law by doing our own thing and maybe expressed sin by cheating or lying or hating someone or not forgiving or refusing to believe in God. These sins make God very sad because He cannot let those kinds of sin into Heaven.

So God gave us the solution for our sins. Jesus. He was God who became man. Perfect. Holy. Loving. And when He died on the cross, He took all the punishment for all the sins of the world.

So if we believe on Jesus and ask Him to forgive our sins, every sin in our heart will be forgiven and we will be given a brand new heart!  Jesus died on the cross but three days later He was resurrected! He is still alive today and wants to give you new life as well!

How do we evangelize?

1.  Power. Be filled with the Spirit!  We cannot evangelize in our own strength.

Act 1:8  But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. 

When you are filled with God's Spirit and your heart is on fire for God, talking about what God has done will come natural.

2.  Pray. Pray that God will make your life a witness. Pray that people's eyes would be opened. The Holy Spirit works through prayer and everyone that is saved is first awakened and led by the Spirit.

3. Practice. Just like anything else in life, we have to learn how to evangelize by actually evangelizing. Look around you for opportunities.

     First, don't hide your faith. Don't cover your candle with a bushel. Jesus said that if we    are ashamed of Him, He will be ashamed of us. Stand up for Jesus.

     Second, take every opportunity to talk to your family or friends about Jesus.   Invite people to church. Invite them to special events. They may not feel comfortable coming      to church but if they see that your life is changed and you are different, it will make them     hungry and they may ask questions. Ask God to help you answer their questions. The Holy Spirit has promised to help us to know what to say.

     Third, find some way to reach out to those in your neighborhood. Maybe its by   passing out tracts. Maybe its by posting Christian content online. Maybe its by writing      Scripture on the mail you send out. Maybe its by opening a Bible study in your home. Be      available for God to use.

4. Patience.  It may take years to win one soul. We need lots of love and patience to keep being faithful to the souls around us. Even Jesus was sometimes rejected when He preached the good news. People may misunderstand us or dislike it when we talk about Jesus. But if we never witness because its too hard...they will never get the chance to hear. But if we will pray and cry over their souls and go out and be faithful to this generation...God will give us fruit!

Psa 126:6  He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.
