Conditions of Salvation

Who can be saved? How are people saved?  What do we have to do to be saved?  How do we stay saved? In this lesson we will do our best to answer these questions from God's Word.

First, to understand salvation we have to understand sin and man's fallen nature. From the time of Adam and Eve's disobedience to God's law and their separation from God, man has been in need of salvation from sin and the punishment of sin, which is Hell.

Jesus Christ came as our Savior and died on the cross to take the punishment for our sins and give us His wonderful salvation.

Now let's look at some of the conditions of salvation.

       1. Salvation is available for every person. Any race, any nation, any social position, any religion, male or female, young or old, rich or poor, slave or free, salvation is available to all.

Rev 5:9  ...Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation

2.     Salvation cannot be obtained by good works. We cannot become holy on our own.

Down through history and in many religions, man tries to get to God by making himself more worthy. He tries avoiding sin, secluding himself from the world, doing good deeds, reading religious books, doing religious rituals, maybe even inflicting pain upon himself for his sins.

All of these are man's efforts to save himself, to try to purify himself, and they are futile efforts.

II Timothy 1:9, Ephesians 2:8-10 People cannot be saved even by following the Bible and God's law. Pharisees kept all the laws of Moses outwardly but had hearts full of hate and unbelief towards Jesus. Good works are necessary and natural for a Christian but they are the result of salvation not the source of salvation.

3.     Salvation is by faith in Jesus.

Romans 10:9  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

By the work of the Holy Spirit, the Word of God and many times the faithful witness of a Christian, we hear about Jesus and the Gospel. We hear that He is the Son of God, the Savior, the only one who can take away our sin and how He died on the cross and was resurrected and is now alive and praying for us!

When we believe with all of our heart that Jesus is God and died for our sins and is able to save us from our sins, we at that moment become a child of God and enter into the kingdom of God.     As fallen humans we are dead spiritually and we cannot believe on our own. The Spirit of God has to help us to believe. The good news is anyone can believe on Jesus! If they will just respond to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, He will help them to believe.

Faith is the condition for salvation and we see many expressions of this saving faith in the Bible. Among them are confession of sin, admittance of guilt, repentance, calling out to God, water baptism etc. These are some of the things a person will do when they truly realize they are a sinner and Jesus is the only way of salvation.

4.     Salvation can be forfeited. We have a free will and we can walk away from Jesus

We can fall prey to Satan's temptations and turn away from God. Some examples:

We can turn back to sin and the world as a pig returns to mud  2 Peter 2:20-22

They blasphemed 冒瀆ーぼうとく God and threw away their clean conscience I Tim 1:19-20

Listening to seducing evil spirits, and to false hypocritical teachers. I Tim 4:1-3

These neglected their own family and did not provide for them 家族の世話しない I Tim 5:8

Loving money more than God, they erred from the faith 信仰から迷い出た  1 Tim 6:10,

5.     How to continue in God's salvation and safely make it to Heaven

-Abide in Jesus. (John 15:4-6, I John 2:28) Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He is our source of eternal life. If we take our eyes off of Him or do not abide in Him, we lose eternal life. If we abide in Him and draw close to Him, we are in the safest place in the world. Nothing can take away our salvation if we are listening to His voice and following Him.

-Be filled with the Spirit- John 14:26, Luke 11:13, Galatians 5:16-25 The Spirit purges out all the sinful roots in our heart and helps to walk in holiness in a wicked world. He is our Helper. He guides us to all truth.

-Walk in the light- 1 John 1:7  God doesn't tell us everything at once. But as He shows us little by little we walk in the light and do what is right. We follow God who is the Light.

-Keep the commandments of Jesus-( John 15:10, John 14;15 )Jesus said if you love me, keep my commandments. As we do what He says we love Him more and become more like Him.

-Live by faith and trust Hebrews 10:38, Proverbs 3:5-7 Everyday we put our faith in Jesus and trust Him. He knows best.

-Endure to the end- Matthew 24:13 If we hold on to Jesus no matter what happens, we will make it safe to Heaven.
