5. God the Son Part One
( BMC Manual Articles of Religion ) We believe in Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, the Second Person of the Triune Godhead, that He was eternally one with the Father, that He was conceived by the Holy Ghost, was born of the Virgin Mary and became incarnate so that two whole and perfect natures, that is to say the Godhead and manhood, are thus united in one person, very God and very man, the God-man. We believe that Jesus Christ died for our sins, and not only for actual sins but also for original sin, that He might reconcile us to God. He arose from the dead and took again His body, together with all things appertaining to the perfection of man's nature, wherewith He ascended into heaven and is there engaged in intercession for us (Luke 1:27-35; John 1:14, 3:16; Acts 4:12; Romans 5:10; Hebrews 7:25).
Jesus Christ is the central figure of Christianity. In fact, He is the central figure of all human history. Our current calendar uses His birth over 2000 years ago as its starting point. His birth and resurrection are remembered every year by billions of people. In His name countless hospitals, schools, orphanages and churches have been built. He is God become man. The only perfect man to ever live. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He is our Savior.
The appearances of the Pre-incarnate Christ in the OT.
Jesus is just as eternal as God the Father and the Holy Ghost and so we would expect to have a few glimpses of Him even in the OT. The following appearances are often credited to the Pre-incarnate Christ.
• One of the 3 “men” that met with Abraham was called “LORD” (Genesis 18: 1-2, 22)
• The “angel” 「人」 who wrestled with Jacob was called God (Genesis 32:24-30),
• the “son of the gods” who walked in the fire with the Daniel's three friends (Daniel 3:25)
These appearances are unique because they portray both the idea of God and man. Also in many other passages it is clear that no one could look at the Father and live. Even Moses who spent 40 days up on Mt. Sinai with God and was very close to God was only allowed to see His back.
Prophecies about Jesus the Messiah (anointed one, the Christ )
There are over 300 references to the Messiah in the OT that are fulfilled by Jesus. The OT was written from 1500 B.C to 450 B.C. All of the prophecies about Jesus were written at least 450 years before His birth. Many of these are from Isaiah (700 B.C. ) and David (1000 B.C. ) Some of the detailed prophecies include: born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14), seed of Abraham (Genesis 22:18), of the tribe of Judah ( Genesis 49:10), house of David (Jeremiah 23:5), born at Bethlehem (Micah 5:2), His name would be Emmanuel (Isaiah 7:14), He would be preceded by a messenger John the Baptist (Isaiah 40:3), He would enter Jerusalem on a donkey (Zechariah 9:9), He would be resurrected (Psalm 16:10), He would be sold for 30 pieces of silver and it would be thrown into God's house and then used to buy a potter's field (Zechariah 11:12,13), He would be silent before His accusers (Isaiah 53:7), He would be wounded and bruised (Isaiah 53:5) He would be hit and spit upon ( Isaiah 50:6), He would be mocked ( Psalm 22:7-8), His hands and feet would be pierced (Psalm 22:16), He would be crucified with thieves (Isaiah 53:12), He would intercede for His persecutors (Isaiah 53:12), His clothing would be gambled for (Psalm 22:18), none of His bones would be broken (Psalm 34:20), when He died, there would be darkness (Amos 8:9), He would be buried in a rich man's tomb (Isaiah 53:9) He would be resurrected ( Psalm 16:10) Peter Stoner in his book “Science speaks” says that the mathematical probability for one man to fulfill even just 8 of these prophecies is one in 1017
His miraculous and singularly unique birth Matthew 1:18-25
As God, Jesus has always existed. He is eternal. He was present at Creation with the Father and the Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26, John 17:24) But God so loved the world that He gave His only Son to this world. Jesus as God took on flesh and blood and became human. He did that by being born to a young Jewish girl named Mary. This was the first and only time that a woman was with child before she ever was with a man. The Holy Spirit placed the very essence of God (Jesus Christ) in the womb of Mary. Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
Joseph was so horrified when he found out that Mary was with child that he planned to break their engagement quietly to avoid embarrassing her too much. An angel then told him that this was of God and so even though she was pregnant, he went ahead and took her as his wife.
His sacrificial and sinless life Luke 4:18 Hebrews 4:15
From the time when Jesus was 12 years old and talked to the religious leaders in the Temple for 3 days to His last moments on earth after the Resurrection, we see that Jesus was no ordinary man. He was perfectly sinless. He never thought or acted in a way that was contrary to God's perfect law. He did not live for his own selfish pursuits but lived solely for others. He walked, rode, taught, healed, helped, prayed, forgave sins, and preached so that people could be set free from the bondage of sin. He experienced every temptation that is common to man and yet came through sinless. He is the perfect example to each one of us. If we stay close to Him and listen to the Holy Spirit, we also can live above sin in this life!
He is the Savior of the world- There is salvation through no other
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Philippians 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
Php 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Php 2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
