7. God the Son ( C ) The deity and humanity of Jesus
Jesus the Son of God- His Deity John 1:1-14, Colossians 1:15-23
Is Jesus really God? This is an important question that our very salvation depends upon. What you believe about Jesus will determine your destiny. (John 8:24) The Muslims say Jesus was a great prophet. The Mormons say that Jesus visited America. The Jehovah's witnesses say He is the highest created being. These religions all deny that Jesus is God. If someone asks you to show them from God's Word the proof that Jesus is God, can you show them? I hope this will be a good resource when dealing with the cults and religions that respect Jesus but do not believe in His divinity or salvation.
1. He had no human father. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit Matthew 1:20
Mary and Joseph were both righteous and holy young people and they had kept themselves pure. They were engaged to be married and when Joseph heard that Mary was pregnant he was shocked and planned to break up with her quietly. As he was thinking about these things, an angel came and told him that he should go ahead and marry Mary because the child that she was carrying was not from a human father but from God. He was not just a good prophet or teacher, He is the Son of God.
2. He received worship
We see several different instances in Scripture where the apostles or even angels refused to be worshiped. Cornelius tries to worship Peter (Acts 10:25,26), The Apostle John tries to worship an angel (Revelation 19:10) The people of Lystra try to worship Paul and Barnabas (Acts 14:11-15) In every instance they said, “Don't worship us, we are not God!”
But when people worshiped Jesus, He accepted the worship because He is God.
The demons fall down before Jesus and acknowledge His deity (Mark 3:11)
A leper worships Jesus (Matthew 8:2)
The apostles worship Jesus (Matthew 14:33)
The blind man who was healed worships Jesus (John 9:38)
The man with the unclean spirit worships Jesus (Mark 5:6)
The women disciples worship Jesus (Matthew 28:9)
If Jesus was merely a good teacher or prophet He would have vehemently denied that He was God and would have pointed people to worship God. Instead we see that since He is God, He was comfortable receiving worship even though He had taken on a human body.
3. He put Himself on the same level as God the Father
Jesus says “I and my Father are one” and the Jews try to stone Him for blasphemy (John 10:30-33)
“If ye had known me (Jesus), ye should have known my Father also” (John 14:7)
“he that hath seen me ( Jesus) hath seen the Father” (John 14:9)
Jesus and the Father had the same glory at the beginning of the world (John 17:5)
4. He not only worked miracles but He forgave sins
Jesus performed many miracles such as healing the blind, lame, deaf, dumb, lepers, and raising the dead but the Apostles were also able to heal in the name of Jesus. But when it came to people's sins no apostle could say, “I forgive your sins” Only God can forgive sins.
He forgives the man who is sick with palsy (Matthew 9:2)
He forgives the sinner lady who washed His feet (Luke 7:48)
5. He existed before He was born to His human mother Mary
Jesus told the Jews that He was alive before the days of Abraham who had lived over 1900 years ago
“Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58) This “I AM” is the same name God gave Moses at the burning bush when Moses asked God what His name was. (Exodus 3:14) It means that He has always existed and has always been able to say “ I AM” He had no beginning and He has no ending.
Jesus the Son of Man- His humanity (Hebrews 2:9-18)
How can God truly become human? Is it possible for the Creator of all things to limit Himself to a human body? Its hard for us to understand that God actually condescended to put Himself in human form. Its incredible to think that God was a tiny helpless baby for a short time!!
Its very important that we understand Jesus is God but its also important that we see that He did not live some super-human life. For the most part, He actually limited Himself to live just as you and I do.
He took on Him the seed of Abraham-
He became a Jew. He suffered as a Jew under Roman rule. He knew what it was like to live under a tyrant. Herod the Great killed all the babies in Jerusalem to try to kill this new baby king. His cousin, John the Baptist, was killed by Herod Antipas. Jesus was sentenced to crucifixion by Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor. He also felt the whole weight of the merciless human traditions of the Jews. They had taken the Old Testament laws given by God and had written thousands of their own rules to supplement God's law. They had no mercy,
love or common sense in their application of these traditions.
He took part of flesh and blood-
He was 100% human. He faced hunger (fasting 40 days), exhaustion(spent all night in prayer, sleeping in the boat while the disciples rowed) and loneliness(in the Garden of Gethsemane). He knew what it was to be weak (unable to carry the cross to Golgotha), He was on the receiving end of prejudice (Nathanael), jealousy, hatred (Pharisees), misunderstanding ( people thought He had come to be king), inconvenience ( He had nowhere to lay His head ) and the list goes on... Finally, in the end He experienced one of the cruelest death imaginable. He was no stranger to all the worries and sufferings of this life. And He experienced all of it because of His love for us.
He was tempted in all points as we were-
He was severely tempted 3 times by Satan while He was at His weakest point, physically and mentally. He was probably tempted to give up multiple times. He went through all the routine temptations that Satan tempts us with. The temptations to lie, to cheat, to steal, to pride, to sinful anger, to despair, etc. He showed us that you can be fully human and still have victory over sin. Not once did He use His deity to fight temptation. Every time He used the common tools that any of us can use to escape the traps of Satan. Prayer, scripture, faith, surrender, love for God etc. We can use these same tools and experience the same victory over sin that He did!
