Articles of Religion (BMC Manual) 1.
We believe there is but one living and true God, holy, everlasting, of infinite power, wisdom and goodness; the Maker and Preserver of all things, visible and invisible; that in the unity of the Godhead there are three persons of one substance, power and eternity--the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost (I Corinthians 8:6; Romans 15:6: Isaiah 64:8; Ephesians 1:3).
1Co 8:6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
When we study God we must not only use our mind and logic to try to understand Him but we must use our spirit and our heart. We will never fully comprehend God with our intellect but we can draw from His limitless personality through our spirit. Knowing God more and more is one of the wonderful and exciting privileges of every Christian. To try to understand God better we have listed some of His attributes for us to consider today.
He is eternal
Isa 40:28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.
One of the hardest things for the human brain to try to comprehend is the fact that God is eternal. He was never created, He was never born, He has no beginning. He lives outside of time. He has been described as “the Eternal Now”
Its hard for us to understand this because everything we see has a beginning. The planets, the mountains, the ocean, no matter how old they are... they had a beginning.
God existed before all that we see and know and He will exist for ever and ever into the future.
He is also unchanging. He is the same yesterday, today and forever.
He is the Creator of all
Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
In the first chapter of Genesis we see that God made all the natural world around us. The sun, moon, planets, stars, space, the atmosphere, the land and sea, the fish and animals and finally humans. So many characteristics of the natural world point not to random chance and evolution but to a specific and intelligent design. From the structure of a human cell to the formation of the galaxies we see God's hand in Creation.
He is omnipotent
Gen_18:14 Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.
Since God made us and everything in this world, it is logical that He can also work in any way that He sees fit and is not limited by time, space, or a lack of power or ability. He only chooses to limit Himself in order to respect our human free will and choice. There are some things that He can do but that He will not do, such as deceive or tell a lie because that would contradict another one of His attributes, His holiness.
He is omniscient
Psa_44:21 Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
There are no secrets with God. The Bible makes it clear that He has all knowledge, all wisdom, and sees all that takes place not only in the life of every person but He also sees the thoughts and intents of our hearts. He knows the past, the present and the future. When Adam and Eve sinned, God already knew that their sin would mean the death of Jesus on a cruel Roman cross 4000 years later. God sees the big picture. There is nothing beyond His understanding or comprehension.
He is omnipresent
Psa 139:7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
Psa 139:8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
In the person of Jesus Christ God limited Himself to the confines of a human body and could only be in one place at a time, but God the Father is not limited to space. He can be in Heaven and on earth at the same time. He can be with the Christians in Africa at the same time that He with the Christians in the Philippines. He is beyond measuring or calculation but the Bible tells us that the earth is His footstool. His size and reach far exceed the outward limits of the vast universe in which we live. Humans strain to understand our universe by using powerful telescopes and attempting to calculate tremendous distances with measurements such as the light year but God envelopes all of that gigantic space.
He is holy
Lev 19:2 Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy.
God cannot sin. He cannot lie. It is against His nature to do any wrong. When He expresses hatred, it is a pure hatred towards sin. When He is angry it is not like the petty anger of humans but the righteous indignation of a holy God. He is perfect. He is complete. He is truth. All of the commandments and laws of God's Word come from His sense of justice and holiness and truth. To know Him is to know the truth.
He is love
1 John 4:8 ... God is love.
God's love and holiness influence all of His other attributes. His attributes will never condradict. He can be both loving and holy. Both strong and kind. At the same time full of hate for the poison of sin and full of love for the lost sinner. The greatest expression of the love of God is seen in sending His only begotten Son into the world to die for the atonement of the human race. By that sacrificial act He not only said He loved us but He proved His eternal love for the every member of the human race.
Why is He called Father?
He is called Father 272 times in the New Testament. Many of these times Jesus refers to Him as “My Father” but other times He speaks to His disciples and says, “Your Father”
In one way God is the Father of all living things because He created all mankind and He is technically the “Father” of all but it goes deeper than that. Jesus told the Jews who refused to believe in Him that they were “of your father the Devil” (John 8:44) and so we see that when people fall into sin and walk away from their Creator and Father, they are siding with another father, the Devil. To be a true son of God and to really be able to call God “your Father” you must be born again and enter the kingdom of Heaven. Those that have been adopted into the family of God can call Him “Abba, Father” Romans 8:15 「アバ、父」
