第10回 Repentance
(第9回の Repentanceは英語・日本語に分けてがあります。ですのでダウンロード無しで印刷可能です)
We believe that genuine repentance toward God consists in a knowledge of, a godly sorrow for, and a voluntary confession and forsaking of sin. This is brought about by the knowledge of the goodness and severity of God through the medium of the truth and the convincing power of the Holy Spirit. It is demanded of all who have, by act or purpose, become sinners against God. The Spirit of God gives to all who will repent the gracious help of penitence of heart and hope of mercy that they may believe unto pardon and spiritual life (Matthew 3:2; Luke 13:5; John 16:7-11; Romans 3:23; II Corinthians 7:10) (BMC Manual Articles of Religion)
What is repentance?
• Hebrew -נָחַם Nackham –
▪ To sigh, to breathe strongly,
▪ to be sorry, (not just sorry that we were caught but sorry enough to quit sin completely)
▪ comfort and console. (as guilty as we feel there is comfort in knowing God can save)
• Greek - μετανοέω Metanoeo
▪ to think differently, reconsider, (God show us HIS VIEW of sin)
▪ morally to feel compunction
• Starts with conviction of sin- In order to properly repent, a person must properly know they are a sinner before God. God the Holy Spirit uses the conscience to send strong conviction for sin. II Samuel 24:10 (David's heart smote him 良心のとがめを感じた)
• Deep godly sorrow for sin ー II Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
▪ Worldly guilt for sin leads to despair and many times self-harm or suicide.
▪ True godly sorrow is mixed with the hope salvation and the comfort of God's grace.
• Turning from sin –Ezekiel 14:6, II Chronicles 33:10-16 (Manasseh repents)
• Turning to God - “that they should repent and turn to God” Acts 26:20悔い改めて、神に立ち返り
• Making things right – Zacchaeus promises to give back fourfold of all he stole Luke 19:1-10
How important is repentance? Why do we need to repent?
• To all people - Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
• To religious self-righteous people - Luke 13:5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
• To the Christian who has lost his first love for Jesus - Revelation 2:5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.
▪ Candlestick (light, God's presence, place of worship, pastor, Word of God)
What are some examples of repentance in the Bible?
• Nineveh repents Jonah 3:4-10
Let's list out some of the ways they showed their sorrow for their sin.
★ Sackcloth- a course, rough cloth made from animal hair that was uncomfortable to wear and symbolized mourning and humility.
★ Ashes- Sprinkled on the head or all over the body to symbolize human mortality, purification and repentance.
Many times when someone repented in sackcloth and ashes it was in a public place. This was to show everyone that they were truly sorrow for their sin and were humbling themselves before God.
• Job humbles himself before God and repents Job 42:1-6
• David repents of his great sin with Bathsheba Psalm 51:1-17
What are some of the blessings and benefits of true repentance?
1. Acts 3:19-20
• Repent ye therefore,
• and be converted,
and the results are...
• that your sins may be blotted out,
• when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
• And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:
2. Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them,
• Repent,
• and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ
and the results are...
• for the remission of sins,
• and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
3. James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
