We believe that Christian Baptism is a sacrament signifying acceptance of the benefits of the atonement of Jesus Christ. It is to be administered to believers as declarative of their faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior and full purpose of obedience in holiness and righteousness (Acts 8: 35-38; 2:41). Baptism may be administered by sprinkling, pouring or immersion, according to the choice of the applicant.
In the Greek...βαπτίζω Baptizo - to dip, to moisten, to make fully wet, ceremonial ablution,
The first mention of baptism in the Bible is in Matthew Chapter 2. This is when John the Baptist starts his ministry in the wilderness of Judea and calls out for people to repent of their sins and be baptized. During this time thousands of Jews from Jerusalem and Judea came out to the Jordan River and confessed their sins and were baptized. Baptism is definitely a New Testament sacrament. Also in Matthew Chapter 2, we see that Jesus Himself asks John the Baptist to baptize him in the river Jordan. Jesus is not baptized because He “needed to be baptized” but as our Perfect Example He was showing us the way we should go.
Baptism is a sacrament (an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace) Wiley
The Roman Catholic church holds that there are seven sacraments. Baptism, the Lord's Supper, confirmation, ordination, extreme unction, penance and marriage. They believe in the sacramentarian view which says that the sacraments contain the grace they signify. Or in other words when the priest administers the Lord's Supper or Baptism, he is literally bestowing grace on the individual regardless of the faith of the communicant. This puts supposed power in the priest's hand to bestow or deny someone the very gift of salvation. This view takes away the need for a person to have truly repented to God and experienced a change of heart prior to receiving the sacraments.
The Protestant church holds that there are 2 sacraments that Jesus admonished us to keep; Baptism and the Lord's Supper. We do not hold that these actually administer grace or forgiveness to the heart but we do readily encourage every Christian to partake of both of these sacraments as a sign of what God has already done in the heart. Partaking of these sacraments can be a powerful testimony of inward grace and can be a time of great blessing and fellowship with the family of God.
Who is eligible for baptism?
• Anyone who has believed on Jesus and has been truly regenerated is eligible. Acts 8:12
• The Catholic church baptizes newborns but the Protestant view is different in that it puts no age limit but permit children to be baptized if they have had a clear experience of salvation.
What are the 3 modes of baptism?
• Immersion- The candidate stands in waist deep water and one or two pastors help them slowly fall back into the water and then bring them right back up again.
• Pouring- The pastor pours water over the head of the candidate for baptism.
• Sprinkling- The preacher sprinkles water on the head of the one being baptized.
What does baptism signify?
• Going under the water signifies your old sinful self be buried with Christ and then coming up out of the water signifies sharing in the resurrection and new life with Christ. Romans 6:1-13
• Washing with water signifies the cleansing of the heart from sin. Ezekiel 36:25-26
• As circumcision signified being part of the Abrahamic covenant, baptism replaces the Old Testament ritual of circumcision and signifies that we are part of the new covenant, the covenant of grace that was established by the death and resurrection of Jesus.
• It is a sign of separation from the world and identification with God's people.
Confession of faith and baptism ritual
Preacher says: Believing that God has given you forgiveness of sins and spiritual life through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, and that you are thus prepared to receive Christian baptism, as declarative of your saving faith and covenant of obedience, you will now give avowals of your belief and purpose.
Preacher: Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, our Lord; that He was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary; that He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; that the third day He rose from the dead; that He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father and from thence shall come again to judge the quick and the dead?
Candidate says: Yes
Preacher: Do you believe in the Holy Ghost, the Church of God, the communion of saints, the remission of sins, the sanctification of believers, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting?
Candidate answers: All this I steadfastly believe.
Preacher: Will you be baptized in this faith?
Candidate: I will.
Preacher: Do you renounce the devil and all his work, the vain pomp and glory of this world with all covetous desires of the flesh and of the mind?
Candidate: I renounce them all.
Preacher: Will you then obey God's holy will, and keep His commandments, and walk in them all the days of your life?
Candidate: I will.
Preacher: (Candidate's Name) I baptize thee in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
