Original Sin, or Depravity (BMC Manual)
We believe that original sin, or depravity, is that corruption of the nature of all the offspring of Adam by reason of which everyone is very far gone from original righteousness or the pure state of our first parents at the time of their creation, is averse to God, without spiritual life and inclined to evil and that continually (Genesis 6:5; Romans 3:12, 5:12-18 I Corinthians 15:22). In the Scriptures, it is spoken of as the carnal mind, the old man and the flesh (Romans 6:6, 7:14, 8:5-8). We further believe that original sin continues to exist after regeneration, though suppressed, until crucified (eradicated) and destroyed by the baptism with the Holy Ghost (Acts 15:8-9; I John 3:8).
Adam and Eve were created without sin. They were innocent and ignorant of evil.
• Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. (Man's nature reflected God's; man was holy, loving, righteous, but innocent and ignorant of sin)
• Gen 1:31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. (God called all of His creation “very good”; the polluting influence of sin had not yet entered the world at this time)
Adam and Eve's fall
They were given a free will and after a period of time chose to listen to the voice of Satan and fall to his temptation and they both broke the law of God. This was the world's first sin. Their first sin led to other sins and had an influence on their children and grandchildren. From the time of Adam, every human who has been born has grown up to commit sin. Rom 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Because of Adam and Eve's sin, and because of our sin nature, people are dead in trespasses and sins before they receive God's grace. They are blind to God's goodness, unable to save themselves and completely powerless spiritually.
The Sin Nature (also called “the carnal mind” Rom 8:7; “the old man” Eph 4:22; “the flesh” Rom 7:5)
Whereas at creation Adam and Eve had pure hearts and were without sin, after they committed the first sin, sin entered their hearts and sin became a part of their very nature. Every human is born with this sinful nature. The natural path of the soul is towards sin and selfishness.
Eph 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
The Sin Nature in Believers
By the power of God's prevenient grace the sinner who is spiritually dead is awakened by the Holy Spirit and is able to see the truth of God's Word. If he then chooses to believe the gospel (salvation through Jesus) he is forgiven of all of his former acts of sin and given a new start. All guilt and shame and acts of sin are washed away. But that nature of sin still remains under the surface. 1 Cor 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
God's solution for the sin nature – Eradication/Crucifixion
The new Christian is so full of joy and love and happiness in Christ that he finds it fairly easy to resist the pull of his sinful nature and keep from straying into sin. But as time passes he finds it harder and harder to suppress the sin nature. It gives him trouble at every turn and many times pulls him into sin and defeat. This necessitates repentance and asking God for forgiveness. It is not God's plan for a Christian to always struggle with this nature. God's plan is eradication and sanctification. God has the power to change our very nature.
Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
2 Pet 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
The Atonement (BMC Manual)
We believe that Jesus Christ by His suffering (Acts 3:18), by the shedding of His own blood (Romans 5:8-10; Hebrews 9:12) and by His meritorious death on the cross (Ephesians 2:13-16) made full atonement (Romans 5:11) for all sin and that this atonement is the only ground for salvation (Acts 4:12; Ephesians 1:7), its being sufficient for every individual of Adam's race (John 3:16; I John 2:2). The atonement is graciously efficacious for the salvation of the irresponsible, the righteous who have become irresponsible (Romans 4:5) and children in innocency (Mark 10:14) but is efficacious for the salvation of those who reach the age of responsibility only when they repent and believe (Luke 24:47; Acts 16:30-31, 17:30)
Different aspects and definitions of “atonement”
• Jesus redeemed us. “Redemption” means to buy back. This signifies the paying of a price to set a captive free.
1 Cor 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
Jesus paid our ransom with His own life. Matt 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
• Jesus Christ became the sacrificial lamb and scapegoat for the sins of the world.
Lev 16:21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat.
1Pe 1:18-19 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold...But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
• Jesus took our punishment. God's justice required death in Hell as the only fit punishment for sin. As sinners we had earned God's wrath but Jesus stepped between us and death and took our punishment, our sins and our shame. Isa 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
• Jesus reconciled us to God. We were enemies, aliens, sitting in darkness, guilty of crimes against God, unable to free ourselves, unable to wash away our own sins, unable to pay the price for our sins, guilty, weak, bound and awaiting punishment. But Jesus satisfied the justice of God so that we could be reconciled fully to God.
• Jesus was slain from the foundation of the world (Rev 13:8) We know that Jesus was crucified in A.D. 33 but in God's mind, the decision for Jesus to make the atonement for sin had been made from the beginning of time. At any point in history, even thousands of years before the crucifixion, people could be saved by faith in God. God is eternal and infinite and is not limited to time and so people of any age can receive the mercy and grace of the atonement
• Through the atonement of Jesus,
God's love was expressed,
His justice was satisfied,
humanity's salvation was made possible
and millions have entered into the kingdom of God by faith.
