3. The Christian's purpose and goals
What happens after a person is saved? Do we become a Christian just to avoid the punishment for sin or is there a life of faith for us to live for God? What kind of goals and purpose do we have as a child of God?
1. Fellowship with God I Corinthians 1:9 ( Entered into fellowship with Jesus)
• Learn of Him. He said, “Take my yoke upon you and learn of me.” He is the Master Teacher. The Holy Spirit will guide us and tell us what we need to say and how we ought to live.
• Meditate on Him. Think on His attributes. His holiness, love, mercy, grace, omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence, eternal existence, Creativity, atonement, faithfulness.
• Worship Him. Bow low before Him. Adore Him. Honor Him. Praise Him. Thank Him.
• Tell Him everything. There is no burden too heavy for Him to bear. He has told us to bring our cares to Him. He wants to hear all we have to say.
• Hide in Him. All around us are temptations, trials, sin, mean people, misunderstandings, etc. He is our strong tower, our fortress, our protection, our shield. As we fellowship with God, we receive the life, strength, hope, power and love to do all that we need to do and be all that we need to be in our Christian walk. It is the secret of the happy Christian.
2. Entire sanctification I Thessalonians 5:23 Hebrews 12:14
Just as the 12 apostles needed the Holy
Spirit after Jesus went back to Heaven, our Christian experience is not what it should be until we have received the Holy Spirit. When we believe on Jesus and become a child of God, we are
forgiven of our sins and we begin to walk with God. The problem is there remains something in the heart that is resistant to God's ways and His will. Self is still on the throne and God cannot
have perfect control over our heart an life until we are fully surrendered to Him. We need both a purging and eradication of selfish, sinful desire and ego and also a filling by the Spirit
of God.
The filling of the Spirit is promised to every Christian if they will seek God with all of their heart, believe Him and wait on Him for the Spirit.
When the Spirit comes, He purges all the remains of sin in the heart. He brings the fruits of the Spirit, He leads us, He helps us to grow spiritually and to stay holy in a wicked world.
3. Fellowship with fellow believers Galatians 6:2, 10 Acts 2:42 Romans 12:10, 13
Who we spend time with influences how we think and how we live our life. If all of our friends are non-Christian and our job and school are secular, we desperately need fellowship with the family of God. From the very beginning of Creation, God has set aside one day of the week, the Sabbath as a day to worship God and admire His creation. This is also a day where we can gather together and worship God together as a church. Sunday morning worship, evening worship, prayer meetings, Ladies meetings, Youth meetings, potluck dinners, inviting brothers and sisters over to your house for a meal, meeting for coffee etc etc are so helpful to us. We can encourage each other, teach each other, and tell each other about the battles we are going through and how God is helping. We can seek advice from older Christians and we can learn much from their godly examples. Older Christians have the responsibility to live so close to Christ that others can follow their example. The strong can help the weak and by sharing our faith with each other we can all draw closer to God.
4. Glorify God I Peter 2:12
My life 1 Corinthians 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
My words Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
My thoughts Philippians 4:8 ...whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoev er things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
My actions Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
My clothing style I Timothy 2:9-10 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array...but with good works.
My attitude I Timothy 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
5. Tell others what God has done
Testify to your church- People need to hear how God is moving in your life. Take every chance to share the grace of God. Maybe you would rather write your testimony than speak. That is fine. It will help you and help your brothers and sisters if you share the Scriptures God has given you, the songs that have been on your heart, the trials God has brought you through etc
Testify to your family- Let your changed life speak for itself. And then when they ask questions, be bold to testify of the goodness of Jesus! More than anything else, we want our family to know Jesus!!
Testify to your neighbors, friends- Again, abide in Christ and you will be different and they will ask questions. That is your chance. Be prayed up and ready! The Holy Spirit will help you know what to say.
Testify at your job- As you work, remember that you are working for Jesus Christ. You may have a strict or mean boss but if you are working as to the Lord, you can keep a good attitude and have a good Christian witness. You may be the only Christian there. Don't hide your faith. Be a light in the workplace. Lets show forth the love of Jesus.
Evangelize those you have never met! We have a responsibility to the millions of people living around us that have never heard the Good News of the Gospel. Pass out tracts, go door to door, help the church design flyers, help with the homepage, help behind the scenes, pray for your neighbors, pray for the lost in our city. God will move in answer to our prayers! If we draw close to Jesus and are filled with the Holy Spirit, we will want to tell someone about Jesus!
